Cementation / Carburization
It is based on the principle of creating a hard layer on the surface of the steel by sending carbon atoms as interstitial atoms. The processing temperature is between 900-1050°C, depending on the environment in which it is performed.
It is referred to by names such as carburization, carburization, carbon impregnation or carburization.
Cementation (carbon impregnation) is applied to the parts in solid, gas and liquid environments.
High speed cooling is required to form the hard layer. Oil, polymer and hot salt bath can be used as cooling medium. High pressure gas cooling on some thin section parts.
It has many different application areas, from small gun parts to large gears.
Material groups that need this process:
-
It is applied to steels containing 0.1-0.2% carbon.
-
SAE 8620, 16MnCr5, 18NiCr5-4 (1.5810) etc.
-
16NiCr4 (1.5714), 18NiCrMo7-6, 20MnCr5
-
CQI-9 Table A is used for this heat treatment technique in the automotive industry.
